Banker Lopez Gassler Loses Another Long Time Partner and Friend
March 6, 2018Douglas D. Underwood, 53, passed away March 2, 2018, loved by many. Doug was well known for his sense of humor, his gracious hospitality and, most of all, his kindness and generosity. His home was always open to family, friends and neighbors. Doug was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in Diamondhead , Mississippi. He graduated cum laude from the University of Texas in 1987 and received his law degree with highest honors from The Florida State University College of Law in 1990. He was on the Law Review and won the Gorman Matthews Book Award for Torts, the Book Award for Employment Discrimination and the Book Award for Professional Responsibility.
Doug was a partner in the Fowler White Boggs Banker law firm from 1990-2008 and was a founding partner in the Banker Lopez Gassler law firm from 2008 to present. He was selected as one of The Best Lawyers in America 2012-2014, 2016-2018.
Doug is preceded in death by his father George Underwood and is survived by his grandmother Jane Sohm, his mother Jinky Underwood, his brothers David and Donnie Underwood, his nephews Michael and Jacob Underwood, his nieces Rachel and Julia Underwood, his beloved dog Ginger and many of his friends’ children who affectionately knew him as Uncle Doug and Godfather. Doug loved to travel and has been all over the world, including China, Japan, Turkey, Argentina, Scandinavia, Yugoslavia, Europe, Central America, the Netherlands, Cuba and a trip down the Amazon River. A kinder soul was never met. A truer friend was never had. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Doug’s life at 6:00 pm on Wednesday March 7, at Blount and Curry Macdill, 605 S. MacDill Ave, Tampa, FL.
